I recently went on an Olivia cruise to the Caribbean. It was absolutely wonderful! It was so much more than a vacation. As I had hoped, it was like an intensive therapy experience in that I had the pleasure of being surrounded by a very diverse group of lesbians, which helped blast away old stereotypes and gave me a real feel for how I felt living openly and congruently. I was incredibly comfortable (except for a few lonely times in the first few days) and got a lot of support from the people with whom I opened up to with regard to my coming out process.

Even though there were a huge amount of women (1800) on board, it still had the feeling of community, especially near the end. It's hard to describe how wonderful it felt to be surrounded by so many great lesbians! I especially got that sense of being part of a community during the shows. I had never been to see a live lesbian comic before, so this was a totally new experience. It felt fantastic to be in the midst of lesbians and laughing about lesbian-oriented stuff. Where else can you get that? I suppose in a comedy club that caters to lesbians, but it probably wouldn't have the same feel, as the awareness that the "real world" is right outside the door might diminish the experience a bit. The comedic performers were all VERY funny! They were: Sudan Westenhoefer, Karen Williams, Carlease, and Vicki Shaw. (Carlease is technically more of an actress than a comic, per her report, but she was my favorite. She's a very funny, authentic woman!) On the music side, I got to see the Indigo Girls--not only in a small concert setting, but also for an intimate question/answer session. I'm a big fan and seeing them in this setting was a real treat!

On a practical level, it was wonderful to have such a variety of things in one place. Without any cars and only my feet to transport, I went from fine dining to entertainment to dancing--with a quick trip to the room to change clothes in-between! I've never had such an active night life in my entire existence! I'm normally quite the homebody, but in the cruise setting, it was very easy to get out there and socialize, opening up a whole new side of myself. During the day I usually went on an excursion--twice diving, and one island tour. Some just went on shore and shopped, walked around, or hung out at the beach. Anyway, I had such a fun-filled, active time that I was very tired by the end of the trip--as well as 3-4 pounds lighter!

There are a lot of ways to make forays into the lesbian community and experience, but for those of you who are finding it difficult for whatever reasons (fear, absence of strong lesbian community in your town, working too many hours, etc.) I highly recommend jumping onto an Olivia cruise or going to one of the resorts, if you prefer to stay on land. The experience of being suddenly visible myself and surrounded by supportive others in a relaxing, fun context helped me to feel more accepting of myself and to create more positive concepts about what it means to be an out lesbian--in WARP speed.
